excerpt:
"And while I was a bit taken at how quickly - and confidently - the fingers were pointing only hours after the 9/11 bombings, I was positively shaken by the first red flag that popped up. His name was John O'Neill - or more precisely, he is the seam that shows... O'Neill, who died in his capacity as head of security for the World Trade Center, was also formerly the New York FBI Counterterror chief responsible for the investigation into Osama bin Laden." |

I didn't see the show, but the briefcase incident in Tampa in the summer of 2000 was pretty strange. Just the fact that it was recovered a few hours later doesn't sound like real life. And news reports said there was no evidence that the classified docs in there had been tampered with -- no fingerprints, they said. Well, couldn't a person have worn gloves and photocopied those docs?
It's all very strange. According to one in-depth piece on O'Neill a few months ago, he was dining with friends at Elaine's the night before 9-11 and told a friend that "something big was about to happen."

I agree, Anon. There's something here, though I don't know what it is either.
A couple of things...
According to the Houston Chronicle, Sept. 22, 2001, quoting a NY Times article:
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/special/terror/aftermath/1058676
"The briefcase, which was recovered and returned to O'Neill, contained several documents that included a report outlining virtually every national security operation in New York." '
and, according to a piece from the Centre for Research on Globalisation there is something unusual about who identified John's body:
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/KUP206A.html
quote
"As regards New York, there is another element involved in germ warfare operations. Actually, a multi-million dollar bunker - serving as a command and control center in the event of a biological attack - was set up at 7 World Trade Center at the direction of Rudolph Giuliani, who also oversaw the mass spraying of malathion over the boroughs of New York City when the West Nile Virus hit town a few summers previously. The man Giuliani placed in charge of that operation, Jerry Hauer, also happened to be the man who found John O'Neill the position at the World Trade Center, as well as being the one who - by his own admission - identified O'Neill's body."
end quoting
Are we to understand that this was the only person to ID the body? Wouldn't a relative also be required to do that?

Vihad, I found that web page while looking for the Houston Chronicle article, so the issue of who ID'ed the body was new to me. I was hoping someone else might know more about it.
I'll look for more info in the next couple of days.

Okay, found some stuff.
* First, one confirmation of Hauer identifying John O'Neill's remains. (source: Laurie Garrett, author, science writer) (1)
* Then that it was Hauer who attributed the "something big was going to happen" comment to John O'Neill. (source: The New Yorker) (2)
* Hauer helped John O'Neill get the job as Head of Security at the WTC. (source: NewYorkMetro.com) (3)
* John O'Neill was one of two to have received the controversial Phoenix Memorandum in July 2001. (source: New York Times) (4)
* More details on the contents of the briefcase as they pertain to NY. (source New York Times) (5)
* One person's claim that a number of evacuations had taken place in the few weeks prior to the attack. He had an office in the South Tower. (source: People.aol.com) (6)

Before the lecture Hauer, who I have known for years, confided that he had just been involved that morning in identifying the body of a close friend, John O'Neill, who died in the WTC. Hauer said "body", but from what else he indicated it was obvious O'Neill?s remains were nothing the family ought to view. Hauer hasn't slept in days. He is haggard and jittery. Distraught.

"John made the statement that he thought something big was going to happen," Hauer recalled.

Jerry Hauer, the city's first terrorism czar under Rudy Giuliani, had just helped guide O'Neill to a soft landing in the private sector -- chief of security for the World Trade Center.
and
He [O'Neill] was last seen walking in the general direction of Tower Two minutes before it collapsed. His body was found a week later; it isn't clear where exactly he died.

TRACES OF TERROR: THE F.B.I. MEMO; ASHCROFT LEARNED OF AGENT'S ALERT JUST AFTER 9/11 By DAVID JOHNSTON and DON VAN NATTA Jr.
The memorandum was sent to counterterrorism offices in two cities -- one copy went to John O'Neill, then the top counterterrorism agent in the F.B.I.'s New York office.
5) New York Times August 19, 2001
F.B.I. Is Investigating a Senior Counterterrorism Agent By DAVID JOHNSTON and JAMES RISEN
Officials identified one document in the briefcase as a draft of what is known in the bureau as the Annual Field Office Report for national security operations in New York. The closely guarded report contained a description of every counterespionage and counterterrorism program in New York and detailed the budget and manpower for each operation. The document, submitted to bureau headquarters, is used as a central planning tool each year.

Ben Fountain, 42, a financial analyst with Fireman's Fund, was coming out of the Chambers Street Station, headed for his office on the 47th floor of the south tower.
How could they let this happen? They knew this building was a target. Over the past few weeks we'd been evacuated a number of times, which is unusual. I think they had an inkling something was going on.

I don't see a clear picture emerging. In some ways it looks like O'Neill may have been set up, but the briefcase incident looks pretty serious. On the other hand, why did it take a year before the publicity on that? And O'Neill's association with the TWA 800 investigation does not speak well for him.
There's one alternative that comes to mind reviewing some of the new info -- one that had never occurred to me before.
Another "enigma wrapped in a mystery surrounded by a paradox." There's not much hope of ever figuring it out, in my view. Or if it can be figured out, that anything real and constructive would come from it. There is hard evidence about the JFK assassination and we're still being fed the standard slop.
Thanks for the compliment.

Jack, I haven't seen that movie yet. Let me find it and get back to you. But I suspect we're thinking the same thing.

Did you ever see the film, "The Usual Suspects"? If so, are you thinking of the "Kaiser Soze" alternative? Would O'Neill in your film version be played by... Kevin Spacey? Do you see what I mean?
Jack, I rented it this weekend and yes, that seems like a possibility to me now.

In "The Usual Suspects" the vulnerable semi-cripple played by Kevin Spacey is one of several criminals blackmailed into doing a job. The blackmailer is Kaiser Soze, a criminal mastermind of legendary proportions. Nobody knows who exactly Soze is, or even if he really exists. The alleged Soze gives his orders through an attorney.
In the end, Kevin Spacey's character is the only one to have survived the job. It turns out that he, in fact, is Kaiser Soze. One of the "victims" turns out to be the mastermind after all.
