In an unscheduled court appearance Friday, Bobby L. Matthews pleaded guilty to five felony charges in the February beating death of 23-month-old Alexis Smothers.

The girl died Feb. 22 from brain swelling caused by violent shaking, a medical examiner found. She also had extensive bruising on her feet and legs and suffered a broken left arm, consistent with ongoing abuse.

Prosecutors charged Matt hews, the boyfriend of the girl's mother, with beating the child to death. Investigators found evidence that Matthews, who lived in the home with Alexis, had subjected Alexis and her older brother, age 5, to several weeks of ritual abuse. The boy was taken into protective custody.

OCCULT FEAR IN HORSE ATTACKS

They believe the attacks, which include draining the animals' blood, are linked to black magic and satanism.

…Four years earlier, Ruth Millar, 49, of Victoria, B.C. couldn't find suitable treatment for her schizophrenic son, Aaron, 24, so she took him into her home. One night as Ruth was doing the supper dishes, Aaron, tormented by voices that told him Ruth was going to harm the family, plucked a ceremonial sword off the wall and drove it through her heart.

…Patten thought he was the "leader of the British Army" heading into the Third World War and could avert the conflict by killing the devil possessing his parents, according to court records.

"He thought he was killing the devil inside his father and that his father was still alive and the devil was then transferred to his mother, so he killed her," testified Dr. Graham Glancy, a psychiatrist who estimated Patten suffered from mental illness for more than 20 years, perhaps since Grade 8.

…Typically, the assailant experienced a quick snap into psychosis, striking out as if in a trance. Many heard non-existent voices that cast their victims as spies, satanic agents or seven-foot monsters.

…Some cases involved some of the most brutal attacks this country has seen - bizarre acts of dismemberment, decapitation and cannibalism.

Prosecutors filed 11 new sex counts Wednesday against a 27-year-old member of a heavy metal band who is suspected of having sex with as many as three underage Inland Valley girls.

...Miller and his bandmates portray themselves as social outcasts and deviants on the band's Web page, which is rife with dark, campy imagery. Miller, who has "Libido' tattooed on his arm, refers to himself as "The Reverend Dustin Miller' on the Internet site. The band's debut recording is titled "Mental Sodomy.'

...Lemkau said Miller was charged with statutory rape in 1997, but that the case was dropped because the victim refused to testify.

On his band's Web site, Miller claims to be a legally ordained minister and founder of an occult religion.

However, much of the information on the Web site appears tongue-in-cheek. One band member claims to be an alien from the "Xigua Nebula deep in negative space,' while another claims to be "a leech upon the Bowels of America.'
